Holmes Boats in Houston Tx.

Does anyone have any info. about Holmes Boats, Manufactured in Houston, Tx., I think in the 50's? I saw one in a garage two doors down from my folks house today. The grandson of the original owner of the boat said it has been sitting in the garage for the last forty plus years. He thinks it was only used one season and then put in the garage. I looked for I.D. plates and could not find any. It had the "Holmes" logo on the rear corners. (in green) The boat was a little dusty but from what I saw in the dark garage it is a nice old wooden boat. It might be up for sale.

UPDATE ON DONATED BOATS, YACHTS AND SHIPS

The new law states that the deduction value of a donated boat, yacht or ship is limited to the gross proceeds of a sale by the charity on the open market. There is however, exceptions to the gross proceeds rule which will allow you to deduct the fair market on the date it was donated. They are as follows:

• An acknowledgement by the receiving charity, that it will make a significant intervening use of the boat or yacht, a detailed statement by the charity of its intended use, the duration of that use and a certification that the boat or yacht will not be sold for a period of at least three years.

• An acknowledgement by the receiving charity that it intends to make material improvements to the boat or yacht increasing it’s value, a detailed description of the intended material improvements and a certification that the boat or yacht will not be sold before completion of the improvements.

• An acknowledgement by the charity that it intends to give or sell the boat or yacht to a needy individual(s) or to a charitable institution at a price significantly below fair market value. This provision applies only if the gift is in furtherance of the charity’s purpose.

• A special rule applies for boats with a value under $5000.00. In this case a donor may claim a deduction for the lesser of the boats fair market value or $5000.00
Most charities will provide the acknowledgment required by submitting to the donor and to the IRS form 1098-C. If the charities acknowledge on this form one of the four exceptions noted above, then the donor is entitled to take the full appraised value of the yacht or boat as a charitable deduction on their Federal and possibly State tax returns in the year in which it was donated.

Any yacht or boat having a fair market value in excess of $5,000.00 must have a written appraisal by an Accredited & Certified Marine Surveyor. Currently, the donor of a vessel with an appraised value in excess of $5000 submits an 8283 and 1098C tax form to the IRS showing the appraised value verified by an Accredited & Certified Marine Surveyor and the intended use by the charity. I have these forms which the charity receiving the vessel, must sign and certify that it will not sell the vessel within three years. The exception to this three year rule is if the donor accepts the immediate sale price realized by the charity as his tax deduction for the donation. After three years there is no reporting requirement as the donated asset is considered depreciated to a point where the appraised value is no longer meaningful.

If for some reason the IRS should take the gigantic step of completely changing their existing procedures and tax forms for charitable donations of yachts, ships & boats, I would be notified immediately. Donating your boat, yacht or commercial vessel is still a very viable financial alternative to an actual sale with many tax advantages.

Make sure that if you or your client will be donating a yacht, ship or boat it will be stated in writing, that the foundation will keep the boat or yacht for three years. Please call me if you have any questions about the new tax law and how it might relate to donating a boat, yacht or ship. To date I have appraised 1,075 yachts, boats and ships nation wide.

Used Fiber Mast

To especially folks associated with Freedom Sailing Yachts,
My solid wooden mast has decayed. I want to replace it with a fiber-resin mast, perhaps on from a Freedom yacht. The mast should be 54 feet long with about 10 inches diameter at the deck penetration and 4 3/4" diameter at the truck.

Hello Everyone. I am looking for the boat my father once owned. I know I will probably not find the exact same one but I know it was a 1950's Oconto Cruiser Limited Editon. There was only a few hundered made some the search will be difficult but if anyone could help me I would like that very much. It was all wood and Plywood i believe. hope you can help.

Hi, I had recently purchase a Boat Misting system online. I was trying to tap into my onboard fresh water source. I was thinking about trying to Tee into one of my fresh water 1/2 inch lines but am not sure there is constant water pressure in all the lines.

Hull Numbers/Identification

I am attempting to locate the hull number on a 1967 Luhrs. The identification is a bit important relative to provenance/origin. Since the Luhrs were built from 1965 to 1985 by Bangor Punta this is a problem cubed. Current Luhrs folks dont have the information. I hope there is a Luhrs owner who might be able to answer this puzzle.

One of my favorite boats in the fleet is for sale, at a pretty fair price. I talked with the owner the other day and he told me there is a problem with anti-freeze in the oil. He thinks it could be head gasket or the jets in the governor. A bigger problem would be electolysis. Here is my question, could a leaky keel cooler cause electrolysis? Is there a pressure check to determine if the keel cooler is leaking?

Last summer we were in Germany, and when we converted (at the going rate), Euros to Dollars and liters to gallons, the Germans were paying $7.20 a gal for regular. The vast majority of that was taxes to support the social welfare system. Autobahn was 1/2 the volume of the early 80's and early 90s when I was stationed there. Hotels and local resturants were almost empty. Places where we were hard-pressed to get into in our two tours, we walk-in and sit-down situations. Their economy is in the drink and going south fast. Same with France, and the rest of "old europe."

So...next time you complain, remember we have it pretty good, compared to the rest of the industrialized world.

But...I said it here two years ago, one year ago (go look it up), and I'll say it again...we are producing less and consuming more. The prices will only go up. And as 1.1 Billion Chineese and 1.0 billion Indians (and about another 1.0 billion other third world country citizens), are all moving from agrarian to industrialized economies. Consumption is going up, the Chineese are locking in vast futures (with the dollars they earn from us dumb Americans who buy Chineese products). We are now sucking hind tit. It will only get worse, and we have no one to blame except ourselves and our politicians. But...because we keep electing these stupid short-sighted politicians, and we keep buying big SUVs for commuting to work, we deserve $3/gal, and even $4/gal gas.

I now have a 16 yr old son, and we just purchased an American made Toyota which gets 31 mpg (@70 mph) for our third car. Have decided to purchase a hybrid for our next vehicle. I'll have to keep the F-250 diesel to pull the boat, but it will not see much use except when pulling the boat or going camping/hunting.

Times are a changing, and my family is changing. The high cost of fuel will cause us to buy more fuel-efficient cars, and build a much smaller, more efficient house for retirement.

I hate to think about all those people who have purchased those 5,000 sq ft "McMansions" who will have to heat and cool them when crude reaches $100 a gal. I can convert to more fuel-efficient cars and drive my truck less, but those people in the McMansions will have trouble moving out of them sometime in the future. I have friends with one, and they already close off and don't heat two bathrooms and three bedrooms/dens. The writing is on the wall.
