We took delivery of our 2001 model Bavaria 37 in October of 2000. Akari now has nearly a year of Puget Sound cruising and she is a fine boat.

There are a few (very few) minor nitpicks I have about the boat, but on balance I'm very happy with her quality and handling. She is superb under sail and the handling under power in the marina is outstanding (love that saildrive).

She has classic looks that won't go out of style, a rich (but practical) interior that says "I'm a sailboat, dammit, not a harbor queen", and good quality hardware throughout.

If you are considering a Bavaria (a fine choice, dollar for dollar -- or euro for euro), a few tips:

- Spend the extra money on the deep lead keel and all that comes with it. The cheaper iron keel versions are substandard models intended for charter fleets.

- Keep on your dealer to make sure any commissioning errors are fixed. The factory quality is excellent, but we had some issues with commissioning and we've heard from others with similar (or worse) complaints.

We have a 2002 Bavaria 37 with the deep keel. Great boat with lots of room and very good sailing performance compared to similar fat cruisers.

I disagree with the other Bavaria 37 owner on the charter versions. The charter versions have a lot more extras and are definitely built better and are MORE expensive. The charter version comes with Lloyds and EU certification which include hull core samples taken from the hull guaranteeing minimum hull thickness and quality. Also, there are more extras with the charter version. For example, the charter version has 3 life lines, stainless through hull fittings, fire proof engine compartment, sanitation hose on all toilet hoses with 66 litre holding tank, stainless braid fuel lines, engine powered bilge pump, . . .

Charter requirements, by law, are very stringent in most "western" countries. The "normal" versions cannot be converted to charter. Yes, the lead keel would be nice, but the iron keel poses no problems, the keel bolts are still stainless.

I have a 2001 37 and I am collecting water in the front starboard shelf which I believe is coming in from the stanchion.  Has anyone experienced this problem?
